Maroje Sorić

Born on January 11. 1979. in Zagreb, Croatia. Medical doctor; PhD in biomedical sciences; Assistant Professor in Physical Activity and Health at the Department of Sport and Exercise Medicine at the Faculty of Kinesiology, University of Zagreb, Croatia and Research Associate at the Faculty of Sport, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia.

RESEARCH INTERESTS AND ACTIVITIES:

From the beginning of his research career his main scientific interests relate to the measurement of physical activity and the relationships of physical activity and inactivity with health and disease. Besides, he investigates the variability of physical activity level during growth and the associations with health and disease. In 2015 he joint NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC), a global effort in collating data on trends in risk factors for non-communicable diseases for all of the world’s countries funded by the Wellcome Trust.

Up to date he published 50 indexed scientific papers, 39 of which are published in journals indexed in Web of Science including Nature and the Lancet. As one of the central members of the NCD-RisC, he was invited to a small group of authors of several articles published in the world's most prestigious journals. Among them, 3 papers stand out: an article published in the journal Nature that refutes the common paradigm that urbanization is the main driver of the current obesity epidemic, and two articles in the Lancet: one on global height and BMI trends in children between 1985 and 2019. and the other on global blood pressure trends over the last 40 years (for details please see the list of publications).

According to the Web of Science his work received 4809 citations up to date (excluding self-cites), h-index=13 (accessed 09.02.2021). Google scholar includes a wider range of publications and totals 8792 citations to his work (h-index=19).

He participated in several national and international scientific projects. He was an invited speaker on numerous international scientific meetings and an active participant in more than 30 national and international scientific meetings.

He served as a reviewer in numerous WOS indexed international scientific journals (Journal of Science and Medicine, Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism, International Journal of Sport Nutrition & Exercise, BMC Public Health, BMC Pediatrics, Perceptual and Motor Skills, Annals of Human Biology) and numerous other internationally indexed journals.

In the period 2007-2010 he was a member in the expert panel formed by the Government of the Republic of Croatia that conceived the “National action plan for the prevention of obesity 2010-2012”.
