MENTORSHIP

1. A PERSON CAN BE APPOINTED MENTOR IF HE OR SHE?

1. holds at least the research-and-teaching rank or art-and-teaching rank of assistant professor or the rank of research associate, or an equivalent rank if the potential mentor earned an academic rank abroad;

2. is head or member of a research project, that is, an active researcher or artist in the sphere of research the dissertation belongs to;

3. is active in scholarship or the arts, relevant in the international scholarly or artistic community, and has published scholarly work or presented artistic work in the last five years related to the topic of the doctoral research.

2. CAN A DOCTORAL CANDIDATE PROPOSE TWO MENTORS?

Two PhD mentors can be elected in the case of interdisciplinary research, therefore, when supervision of experts in another scientific field is required. Also, a second mentor may be assigned in the case when a doctoral student conducting research as dual doctorates. In both cases, the one of the mentor always has to be from the University of Zagreb.

If there are several mentors, each one takes on responsibility for a part of research and a part of the procedure of working on the dissertation, as agreed upon at the outset.

Postgraduate doctoral university study Kinesiology

The Faculty of Kinesiology has been implementing scientific postgraduate study programmes since the academic year 1971/1972. The postgraduate doctoral university study of kinesiology was introduced in the academic year 2006/2007, while in 2015 the Faculty introduced a new postgraduate doctoral university study programme. After completion of the study students acquire 180 ECTS credits and the academic title of Doctor of Social Sciences – field Kinesiology.
Studying at the postgraduate doctoral study includes direct classes for students in the total of 278 elective hours (236 hours and 42 hours of workshops) and between 9 to 11 mandatory and elective courses (the final number of exams depends on the elective module), with an overall workload of 5 246 hours and a total of 180 ECTS credits.

The doctoral study of kinesiology takes 3 years or 6 terms.

Number of required courses/modules

The programme of doctoral study in kinesiology comprises 3 required courses and two elective modules.  The elective modules are selected from A and B list (four offered research modules in each list), as explaned latter.

Number of elective courses/modules

In addition to elective courses that the student chooses within the modules of the programme, the study programme also offers ten elective courses.

Academic title earned upon completion of the doctoral study

Upon completion of the doctoral study of kinesiology, the doctoral student is awarded the academic degree of Doctor of Social Sciences (PhD) in the field of Kinesiology.
